our work : trust beneficiary 2006

| Mhairi Flett, a colleague in need, is the first person who received assistance from the Full Colour Trust. It was Mhairi’s story which inspired the trustees to create the Trust. At age 40 and barely three months after the birth of her second child, Mhairi was diagnosed with breast cancer, given only a weekend to wean her son Brodie, then prepare for surgery. She completed chemotherapy and radiation treatment in November. | |
Mhairi was not able to work for several months and she and husband Jonathan still face higher medical bills than they could ever have imagined, as well as costs of child care and other expenses. Mhairi will go onto a course of Herceptin, a drug which has an excellent record of retarding the re-growth of aggressive breast cancers and should give Mhairi the best chance of regaining her health and bringing up her children. Herceptin is not subsidised by our government and a course of it is expected to cost her about $75,000. Like most families, the Fletts did not have savings which could cover this cost and would have had to re-mortgage their family home. We made a positive difference to Mhairi and her family by fund raising to pay for Herceptin and her additional medical bills by raising about $80,000. At the time of writing, Hairi is doing well and working part time. |
